You have no doubt heard of the fictional School Of Rock, but have you ever heard of the real-life School Of Folk? Well, now you have because that's where we played tonight. A truly bizarre place. When we arrived at around 3pm the school was buzzing with people of all ages walking around with acoustic guitars. I've never seen so many acoustic guitar players in one place, even back stage at a Canadian folk festival.
This school has been up and running for 50 years. It acts as a resource for American Folk Music, as well as a performance space, but most importantly it offers extensive classes in whatever "folk" instrument you could possibly want to play. I'm not sure how they define "folk" instrument, but banjos, acoustic guitars, congas and penny-whistles definitely fit the bill. I wish there was a similar institution in Toronto. It must be a great place to introduce your kids to a style of music.
The performance space was pretty interesting as well. Very small, but comfortable. A great place to see a performance and it would be ideal for a small acoustic ensemble. For us it was a little tight but still pretty good. We had two shows tonight and both were very good (despite my brain cramp at the beginning of Good Friday).
These were, officially, our last two shows in support of Early 21st Century Blues. Now we head home, finish up the new album, re-group and prepare to start it all over again in the new year……we hope to see next time around.
