Aspen (Feb 28, 2006)

If one is looking for the ground zero of ski resort development, I guess Aspen would be it. Even as a kid (so many years ago), Aspen was synonymous with glamour, jet-setting, après-ski and endless trails…..and it still is, if the private jets lined up at the airport and the 50,000 square foot homes on the hillside are any indication. There is a lot of money in this town and I mean a lot of money…the place is dripping with it. But, man, even for a non-skier like myself those slopes sure are enticing.

Both Margo and Jeff were caught in the mountains call. They headed skyward and had an amazing day of skiing. I wandered aimlessly around the town: the altitude finally catching up with me, my head exploding.

The nice thing about playing in towns that are dripping in money is that it usually means that they have a nice performance space or two. Aspen is no exception. The Wheeler Opera House is a spectacular building and probably the nicest venue on this two week jaunt…and that is saying a lot, because we have played some very nice buildings over the past two weeks. We had a very fun gig (last night of camp) and once again we had a very supportive audience. Steven Wright, who we crossed paths with in the late 80’s and struck up a friendship, was in the audience. It has been years since we last saw him and it was fun catching up.

Time to head home and see how Pete’s back is doing. Randall has been excellent in his stead; it has been a real pleasure playing with him. Greg and Rob of Milton Mapes have been excellent as an opening ac; it has been a pleasure listening to them each night. All in all, a very pleasurable couple of weeks.

We hope to see some of you on the East coast in April.
