Crested Butte (Feb 26, 2006)

Back to Tour Diary main page

A winding, bumpy overnight ride through the mountain passes and valleys of Colorado: not so good for sleeping, but great for sightseeing once the sun came up. Deep inside the Rocky Mountains, somewhere in the SW section of the state, spectacular, beautiful, inspiring and a touch claustrophobic. I love visiting this part of the continent.

Crested Butte seems to be a ski village/resort in its infancy. Sure, there are lots of condos piling up at the bass of the hill, but there is still a whole lot of land (and hills) to be developed. The money interests haven’t completely taken over, just yet, or at least they haven’t shown their hand, but if the tiny main street is any indication, they are not far behind: every third storefront is a real estate agency. The result is that the there is still a lot of character in this place. A lot of the old hippie shops (and a lot of the old hippies) still remain from when they must have (re)discovered this valley forty years ago. I hope they all bought land back then. It is a beautiful place.

The theater was a very functional pre-fab joint labeled The Center For The Arts. It was kind of like a lecture hall for 250 of your best students. A very small space so we played a very toned down and muted set. Another excellent audience and I think we delivered.

By the way…Jeff was the only one of us to take to rent skis and take to the hills…what a guy.
