Santa Fe (Feb 20, 2006)

Yesterday’s day off started on a down note. Team Canada suffered its second defeat in a row with a 2 – 0 loss to the Fins. The team is looking terrible. Let’s hope that they pick it up for the medal round.

Santa Fe is a very nice town in which to spend a day-off. Especially in mid-February when the temperature is in the upper 50’s, the sky is cloudless and the air is so darn clean. Although the environment is spectacular, the town has become a bit of a parody of itself, which seems to be inevitable these days. As soon as a town establishes a distinct identity it doesn’t take long for commercial interests to move in and start capitalizing. As a result every second store in Santa Fe sells, Indian-ware, silver and turquoise and every other store sells South West “art” or furnishings. It looks like most of these stores are locally owned and run, which is a good thing, but it’s all a bit much. But as I said, it’s a great place for a quick visit; lots of good food, good coffee, good beer, good weather, beautiful scenery and a very welcoming citizenry.

This was our first time playing at The Lensic Theater. A very beautiful venue. Once again we had an excellent audience, who were open to what we had to offer. Despite that, it was an odd show for us. It probably sounded ok out front, but on-stage we never really found our footing. It was a night where we all struggled to connect with one another.

The high point of the day was the Canadian women’s hockey team capturing the gold medal. They had a pretty easy run of it. They were just too dominating and never had to face their arch rivals, Team USA, who had to settle for the bronze. Let’s hope that their performance inspires the men.
