This is our first time in Taos and unfortunately we didn’t get to see much of the town, but we saw plenty of mother nature’s handy work, which is what it is all about in these parts. It’s a spectacular drive in to town alongside the Rio Grande and through some amazing rock formations. I have a great appreciation for these desert landscapes and I love visiting them, but I don’t think that I could live here. I find them a bit oppressive….perhaps it’s just the heat. We took a little time before soundcheck to visit “The Gorge” which is basically an enormous crack in the desert floor created by many millennia of the Rio Grande running its course. It is, quite literally, an awe-inspiring site and, more importantly, the location where Mickey and Malorie get “married” in Natural Born Killers, their scarf gently fluttering down into the gorge to the strains of “If You Were The Woman And I Was The Man”. We were told that Terminator 4 is shooting a scene there next week. We had a big debate whether the governor of California was going to be in the movie. Half of us arguing that there is no way that a sitting Governor would do such a thing and the other half arguing that, of course he’ll be in it, he’s The Terminator….the line that use to divide reality from fantasy, is looong gone…… The gig was at a kind of odd location on the outskirts of town on the grounds of the largest solar run radio station in the universe (I think its broadcast range is 12 miles). It was a beautiful day to be outside and we had a very nice afternoon, but the show was pretty crappy. Most of the audience was there to catch up with their friends and neighbours and, as a result, hung out at the back of the lawn by the bar, talking. My amp went down right off the top which wasn’t the best way to start. I felt that we were just beginning to find ourselves during the acoustic set, when some moron yelled out “I’m falling asleep”. Then go home and go to sleep you fucking twit. Finally, during the encore, everyone decided that it was “paaartay” time and they rushed the front of the stage. So we played three songs loud and fast, which they all loved, and left the stage with a terrible taste in our mouths.
