Louisville, Iowa City and Chicago (March 27, 28 and 29, 2008)
Back to Tour Diary main page

A very rainy and gloomy day in Louisville, much of it was spent on the bus watching bad movies. During a break in the storm I had an opportunity to wander the main drag of Clifton, the suburb where the theater is located: a lot of restaurants, antique stores and pickle joints. The one very odd thing that I noticed was that there were no signs of support in any of the windows for the Louisville Cardinals, the local NCAA basketball team that, tonight, continues their charge at the championship.

The venue tonight was a new one for us, The Clifton Center. It is located in an old Catholic girls school, that has been turned into a community center. An interesting little theater, not the best sounding room and it was kind of lacking in the production end of things, but with a little care and attention it could be a very good room.

We had a decent show, not particularly inspired, we were all fighting our individual sound demons. The audience, again, was excellent which helped us to continue fighting.

The Cardinals won their game and move on to the next round.

A beautiful, bright, slightly chilly March day in this perfect little college town…and I do mean perfect. The students pretty much have the run of this place: wide pedestrian malls with plenty of cheap food and cheaper booze; lots of book stores and music stores, plenty of places to loiter and hang. A very relaxing town to spend the day. By nightfall the tenor of the place changes significantly. All those fresh young faces begin to consume all of that cheap booze and the screaming and stumbling and puking begins. Very reminiscent of Night Of The Living Dead or perhaps just Nottingham.

A very nice little theater tonight with decent production and a nicely thought out and maintained dressing rooms. We had a pretty good show. The audience, despite the venue being sold out, was very reserved which threw us a little, since all the other audiences this week have been so vocal. They definitely let us know that they enjoyed themselves at the end of the show: a very Canadian attitude. I think this was our first time in Iowa City, we are very much looking forward to a return visit.

Two shows tonight at The School of Folk. We have been here once before and it is a very unique little venue, very intimate and very warm sounding…a very inviting room for both band and audience. We had two very good shows tonight and it was a very fun way to end this run of dates.

We’ll be back at it in a few more weeks. I hope we’ll be seeing some of you on the west coast.
