I woke up this morning in the bus parked behind the venue. The only time that I left the bus was to walk into the venue. The weather came in waves, clear skies in one instant and torrential downpour the next. The streets around the venue were empty for most of the day. The venue, Attucks Theater, located somewhere inside Norfolk, away from the harbour and the regular tourist flow, was once considered “The Apollo of the south”. It’s a beautiful old theater which they have refurbished and built a brand new infrastructure around. A truly excellent facility.

It was a very odd night tonight. The show was part of a performance series promoted by the city of Norfolk. As a result there were a fairly large number of ‘subscribers’ in the audience. This can be a double edged sword, on one hand you get people into the theater that wouldn’t ordinarily be there, but on the other hand it makes it hard to connect with the audience. That was the story of this night…despite playing fairly well, we never felt like we connected with the audience and unfortunately we didn’t have the energy to lift the show up by ourselves.
