What probably keeps Maine from being completely over-run by tourists is that it is still relatively difficult to get to. Aside from Portland there is nothing else that comes even close to being called a city and the further up the coast you travel the more difficult it becomes to access the towns. Despite all that, the Gods/Demons of tourism are hard at work throughout the State and are busy Disney-fying selected towns. Camden is one of those towns, Welcome To Maineville. Everything that one associates with Maine can be found at ones fingertips on Camdens’ Maine Street, but that’s just the way it goes these days. Very few ideas, concepts, cities, towns or, for that matter, people are left to organically change and grow. Everything must be made to fit to a pre-conceived idea….I think it has something to do with maximizing profit, force feeding the consumer, a general distrust of our ability to think, process and discern for ourselves.
Despite, all attempts at homogenizing the town, it is still a wonderful place to visit. It’s location on Penobscot Bay, the salt air and the quality of the light can’t be replicated or “improved” upon and they are all magical. I spent the day wandering the streets, eating various parts of lobster and lying in the park. A beautiful, perfect, Maine day. When Canada begins its takeover of the USA, Maine is being annexed first and the shame is that most Americans won’t even know what they’ve lost.
Another very cool venue tonight. The theater in the Camden Opera House is located on the third floor of one of the original brick buildings (I just made that up) in Camden. We were told that there was enough demand for us to do three shows here and, the next time, we would be more than happy to oblige. I can think of nothing better than spending three days ambling about this town…actually I can think of nothing better than spending a couple of weeks touring exclusively in Maine….The Lobster Tour 2008 (we’ll get right on that)
…oh ya…another amazing audience, and another darn fine show…we must be on some kind of a roll….
