Saratoga & Reno (July 18 and 19, 2007)

A return to one of our favourite venues in the country, The Mountain Winery. When we arrived this morning it was raining and the mountain top was covered in mist and fog. This was a bit disconcerting because there is no cover on the stage and therefore rain at show time means no gig….fortunately by late afternoon the weather cleared up just in time for soundcheck.

It was another excellent Mountain Winery audience, energetic and attentive. We were a little distracted because Margo’s son, Ed, took a header into a roadcase right before the show and cut his head. He was ok, once the blood cleared, no stitches required. But it wasn’t the best way to get focused as you’re about to step on to the stage. Despite that, we played pretty decently. We love this venue, but it may be the last time we play here. After this season they are tearing it all down and replacing it with a much larger capacity venue. I hope they don’t wreck the ambience and the mere fact that they are going from 1700 to 2500 seats might mean that we don’t having the drawing power to play here any more…another one bites the dust….at least we will have some very fond memories.

****

It’s been about ten years since we played Reno and in that time the population has just about doubled. You can tell by the vast expanse of new malls radiating from the downtown core….

We played a very cool venue tonight (the Hawkins Amphitheater) located on the outskirts of Reno: the type of place that encourages people to experiment with their entertainment dollar, because it is such an enjoyable place to spend an evening. It felt like we had many first-timers tonight as well as a healthy scattering of hard-cores….hopefully we converted a few new-comers and satisfied a few hard-cores. We had a great day, we’ll have to get back here more often.
