Beautiful - A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot
Includes The Way I Feel
Another all-Canadian compilation. This one includes The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, Ron Sexsmith and Bruce Cockburn interpreting classic Gordon Lightfoot songs. We've given the Cowboy Junkies treatment to "The Way I Feel." Gordon's a Canadian legend and we're honoured to have been asked to contribute to this project.

Niagara Niagara (music from "The Shooting Gallery" motion picture)
Includes Something More Besides You, Niagara Theme, and At A Crossroads
Over the past several years Mike and Jeff Bird have composed, performed and recorded a handful of film scores. Most of the films that they have worked on have gone the way of most independent films and disappeared into obscurity. The most commercially successful of these films is Niagara, Niagara and it is the only one that had a soundtrack release.
The CD includes two of the many music cues written and recorded by Mike and Jeff (including the Niagara, Niagara theme). It is also loaded with some excellent Americana: a couple of the more notable cuts on the CD is a terrific and obscure Lucinda Williams track, Sharp Cutting Wings, and the exquisite Patty Griffin song, You Are Not Alone.

Mountain Stage Volume 7
Includes Pale Sun
We have appeared on the Mountain Stage radio program six or seven times over the years. It is one of only a handful of programs left in the ever-shrinking radio universe that is centered around live music. For that reason alone we always make an effort to get to its broadcast home in Charleston, West Virginia, every few years. Another reason is that there is always an artist or two on the bill that we are excited to meet.
Over the years we have shared the Mountain stage with Alex Chilton, Pop Staples, Loudon Wainwright III and many more. The night that this performance of Pale Sun was recorded we had the unparalleled pleasure of sharing it with The Band. That night we felt very small indeed.

MapleMusic One
Includes Carmelita
While we were working on Lay It Down we stumbled upon the inspired music of Fred Eaglesmith. We decided to record a few different covers while we were in the studio and Carmelita was one of them. It is a brilliant song that tells the tale of a couple of farm labourers, set in Southern Ontario's tobacco belt. It is very reminiscent of the best of The Band's writing.
We ended up not putting any covers on Lay It Down so this track has sat basically unreleased (it was included as a B side for a radio single) until now. This compilation launches the new MapleMusic Recordings label of which we are very proud and excited to be a part. It will hopefully serve, to many of you, as an introduction to a lot of great artists whose music can be found at maplemusic.com.

Return Of The Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons
Includes Ooh Las Vegas
We were honoured to get asked to contribute a song to this tribute album. The music of Gram Parsons has always been very important to us and Emmylou Harris, who put the album together, is one of our heroes.
We were also honoured to be included among the stellar line-up that contributed songs to this album. Originally we considered doing one of Gram's ballads, but we felt that it would have been too easy and we wanted to challenge ourselves. So we looked for a song that had a simple structure and one that we could turn inside out; Ooh Las Vegas fit the bill.
We had just completed recording Miles From Our Home and had learnt a lot about production from producer John Leckie, so we decided to put our lessons to the test. Mike recorded the basic tracks by himself in the basement of Big White using an 8-track recorder. We then went to Chemical Sound with those tapes where Pete and Al laid down their tracks, Mike put on a few more layers of guitar and then Margo layered four separate vocal tracks. The tapes were then sent to Chris Lord-Alge (who mixed Miles From Our Home) in LA. Chris did an outstanding job putting it all together and ensuring that the song rocked. We love the way that this song came out and so did the record company. They decided to use it as the lead single.

Pump Up The Volume: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Includes Me and the Devil
We were asked if we were interested in contributing an unreleased track to this teen-movie that was starring this up-and-coming young movie star named Christian Slater. We said yes and listened to what we had lying around. We had just completed recording The Caution Horses and during those sessions had recorded a live-in-the-studio take of Robert Johnson's Me and the Devil. We had originally done a version of the song on Whites Off Earth Now!! and it had been a constant in our live repertoire ever since.
As you can hear on this recording it had developed considerably on stage over the years. It hardly appears at all in the final cut of the movie, you can barely recognize a few of the opening bars if you listen hard enough. We were flown to LA for the world premiere and performed at the official party afterwards. One of the most miserable gigs we've ever played…talk about a flock of geese -- full-on migration.

Poet: A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt
Includes Highway Kind
This is another tribute album with which we were more than excited to be a part of. Townes' music is hugely important to us and we have covered a few of his songs in the past. Once again the lineup on the album is spectacular and we were flattered to be included among such luminaries.
We started to play Highway Kind live (during the Waltz Across America Tours) before we recorded it. During a break in the tour we decided to go into Chemical Sound in order to experiment with recording live off the floor. We wanted to see if the band that we had out on the road with us and if the studio itself was conducive to this type of recording. In a way, we looked upon it as pre-production for our next album, which would become Open.
The experiment worked. We set up in the room and just ran through the song a few times and then left, no overdubs or any review of the tapes. We asked the engineer to do a "good" rough mix of all the takes. When we got the tapes we liked what we heard (so much so that we decided to
use Chemical and record in the same manner and with the same band for Open), but we sat on the song because we had not intended use for it.
Several months later we got a call from Jeanene Van Zandt (Townes' wife) asking us if we wanted to participate in Poet; we immediately said yes and named our song.

Borrowed Tunes: A Tribute to Neil Young
Includes Tired Eyes
We got wind that this album was being planned and liked the concept: a Neil Young tribute album, with all the performers being Canadian. Neil Young is probably our biggest and most long-standing hero and influence. We've been listening to his music for over thirty years. His Tonight's The Night album has always been one of our favourites and Tired Eyes is just one of those odd songs that we wanted to take a shot at.
There was basically no budget for the recording so we decided to try a stripped down version of the song. Mike and Margo went to Jeff Bird's little home studio and worked on the song for an afternoon. We left the tapes in Jeff's hands to mix and that was that.
